If you’ve been dreaming up a trip to New Zealand, chances are you’ve come across the Milford Sound Swing. This is one of the most photographed locations in Fiordland and offers dreamy views across the foreshore and out to the mountains.

The Milford Sound Swing was built by one of the local workers for his girlfriend, and today, it’s famous thanks to its popularity on social media. 

How to get there

Despite being so famous, the Milford Sound Swing is notoriously difficult to find. But if you follow the Milford Foreshore Track, you'll stumble upon it after about 250m.

1. The Milford Foreshore track starts at the carpark opposite Milford Sound Café.

2. From the carpark, walk left and wander through beautiful beech forest and past the foreshore, which boasts gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains.

3. Follow the path over a small bridge and keep an eye out for a bit of opening in the bushes.

4. Then turn right off the track, and you’ll see the swing on a beach to your right.

Know before you go

• The swing is at its best during sunset, when the sunlight hits the surrounding mountains and creates a golden glow.

• If you’re planning to visit at high tide, you’ll have to walk close to the bush to get to the swing. You might get your feet wet, so I’d recommend wearing walking boots or shoes that you don’t mind getting splashed.

Personal note: I had sandflies as much as the best person, and they are absolutely relentless in this corner of the country. Bring lots of insect repellent with you!!!
