Punakaiki is tucked away in Paparoa National Park and is best known for the incredible Pancake Rocks and Blowholes.

As the name suggests, these limestone formations look just like stacks of pancakes and were formed over 30 million years ago from tiny marine fragments that settled on the seabed. Over time, immense water pressure solidified them into alternating hard and soft layers. Then, seismic activity lifted them above the ocean floor, and wind, rain, and seawater sculpted them into the dramatic, otherworldly shapes you see today. Visiting the Pancake Rocks and Blowholes is very easy. You'll follow a short 1.1km/20-minute loop walk through a stunning flax and nīkau palm grove.

But there is so much more to Punakaiki than just the Pancake Rocks. The drive from Greymouth to Westport, known as the Great Coast Road, is one of the most scenic roads in New Zealand. This stretch of State Highway 6 boasts unreal coastal views that will have you stopping every 10 minutes to take photos.

If you love hiking, the Paparoa Track is one of New Zealand’s Great Walks! This 55km, three-day hiking and biking trail takes you through lush rainforest and towering limestone canyons. I don't think there's anything more relaxing than waking up in the morning when the only thing on your agenda is to walk as far as possible, eat dinner, go to bed and do the same thing tomorrow.

But even if you’re not up for a big adventure, that's okay! There’s something special about slowing down here. You can spend your day swimming in crystal-clear rivers, watching the waves crash against the cliffs at sunset, or wandering along hidden beaches. If you're feeling adventurous, go rock climbing, caving, or paddleboarding.
