Tucked away in Windwhistle, just over an hour from Christchurch, Washpen Falls, a waterfall so beautiful and rugged that it feels like you’ve stepped into another world.

To reach Waspen Falls you’ll follow a 1.5-2 hour loop track through a canyon formed by an ancient volcano. It’s a relatively easy walk with some hills and zigzags, but it doesn’t climb uphill for too long, giving you plenty of opportunities to catch your breath. Along the way, you’ll pass caves and stunning views of the Canterbury Plains until you reach the waterfall. If you’ve ever wanted to feel like an extra in the Jurassic World franchise, now's your chance!

The water drops into a clear pool at the bottom, surrounded by lush ferns, bush and moss. If it’s warm enough (or you’re very brave!) you can go swimming here - it’s a fairly popular spot in the summer.

There's a shelter at the end of the walk, which is a good place to stop and have a picnic. If you’d like to stay here longer, Washpen Chalet can be booked via the owner's website.

How to get here

From Christchurch head west along SH 73 until you reach Darfield. Then turn left onto SH 77/Inland Scenic Road and follow it for 32km. Turn right onto Washpen Falls Road and follow the signs until you reach the carpark at the end of the road. The Washpen Falls track is privately owned and there is a small fee to access it, which helps with track maintenance, etc. There’s a small honesty-box at the start of the trail - adult cost $10 and children cost $5. I never have an issue paying a small fee to keep beautiful spaces open to the public!
