Rugged west coast beach with views of Mount Cook

Photospot

Zpráva od Rach Stewart

Gillespies Beach on the West Coast is a wild and rugged beach offering unique views of the Southern Alps and remnants of old gold mining operations. The scenic drive to the beach is an adventure in itself, with a narrow, unsealed road winding through beautiful NZ bush.

There are a few coastal walks in the area but I have to be honest and say that they haven't been looked after and are over run with weeds which is a real shame.

The only reason I would come out to this spot is for the beach itself and the view of Aoraki Mount Cook from this side of New Zealand. Otherwise it isn't really worth it for 'sight seeing'.

Photography info: This spot is best at sunset during golden hour and twilight, and take your zoom lens with you (70mm - 200mm). I happened to be here during winter when the full moon was rising which was a bonus, but it does look beautiful in the winter months with Mount Cook covered in snow.
