Jardim Botânico da Ribeira do Guilherme is a charming botanical garden located near the village of Lomba da Fazenda in the Nordeste region. It stretches along the Ribeira do Guilherme river, from which it takes its name, and offers a peaceful setting with lush greenery and diverse plant species, many of which are native to the Macaronesian forests. Tall laurel trees and other endemic plants add to the natural beauty of the garden.
One of the highlights here is the network of small waterfalls and ponds scattered throughout, creating a picturesque backdrop. The ponds attract swans and other waterfowl, adding life and movement to the scene. You’ll also find historic water mills within the garden, remnants of the past when locals used these mills for daily life.
While the garden itself is small, making it ideal for a short 10-15 minute walk, it’s a nice stop if you’re already exploring the Nordeste region. Jardim Botânico da Ribeira do Guilherme isn’t necessarily a destination to plan an entire trip around, but it’s a lovely spot to pause, enjoy the tranquil atmosphere, and learn a bit about the local flora and traditions.
