The Cinco Ribeiras Natural Pools are among the most striking swimming spots on Terceira’s coast. Formed naturally by volcanic rock and improved with walkways, ladders, and sunbathing platforms, they offer a chance to dive directly into the Atlantic in a setting that feels wild and dramatic. Black lava formations meet deep blue water, and the views stretch far out over the ocean.
What I find especially interesting here is the contrast: the infrastructure makes it comfortable and safe to swim, but the setting itself is raw and elemental. On calmer days, the pools feel almost like a natural aquarium with crystal-clear water; when the waves are stronger, you’re reminded of the Atlantic’s power all around you.
The area also has small amenities — a snack bar, changing facilities, and plenty of space to spread a towel or sit by the rocks — which makes it easy to spend an afternoon here. Just nearby, you’ll also find Adega dos Cinco Ribeiras, a well-known restaurant serving local specialties, so combining a swim with a meal is part of the experience.
I would call Cinco Ribeiras a must-visit in summer. For travelers who want to experience Terceira’s coastline in an active way, it’s one of the best natural pools on the island, mixing accessibility, scenery, and the thrill of swimming in the Atlantic itself.
