By the time you’ve had your second cup of coffee and driven 100 kilometres of rough road, a very different ‘attraction’ comes into focus: the loo. To ensure your adventure doesn’t turn into a stressful search in the middle of nowhere, I’ve summarised everything you need to know here. In many places with parking fees, toilets are included; otherwise, expect charges of between 200 and 400 ISK.

What to expect in this guide:
Petrol Stations along the Ring Road: Your most reliable lifelines (N1, Olís, Orkan) – often free for customers.
Visitor Centers & Attractions: Modern facilities at key sites; often included in the parking fee.
Remote Areas: Rustic outhouses or chemical toilets at trailheads – functional luxury in the cold.
Outdoor Etiquette: How to protect nature and avoid leaving "white flags" (toilet paper).
What to pack in your ‘emergency kit’:
Toilet paper & wet wipes.
Bins bags for proper disposal.
Card or Smartphone: For contactless payment (standard almost everywhere).
Some loose change: Only for the absolute emergencies at isolated hiking car parks.
