The Tomasee (aka Lai da Tuma) is a small lake and source of the Rhine river (aka Rheinquelle). From the Oberalp mountain pass, you can hike up a rocky path to a magical spring is encircled by mountains.
Trail: Moderate • 3.5 h • 8 k • 460m up & down
See trail map
The trail climbs 350 m over the last 2 km, which made our kids a little grumpy. But we saw lots of families with little kids on this trail (including a couple 3 yr olds carrying their own packs put our kids to shame!), so you can do it too!
We usually picnic at the lake. But there is a mountain hut a short hike above the lake, selling drinks (no beer though) and snacks.
Despite it’s popularity, it’s a calm and magical place. There’s plenty of room to spread out, with grass for running, boulders for climbing and wild blueberries for picking.
This trail is part of the long distance Vier Quellen Weg, which visits the source of four rivers.
