Take in the stunning scenery along the Bow Valley Parkway (Highway 1A)—a beautifully scenic alternative to the Trans-Canada Highway between Banff and Lake Louise. This 49 km route winds through quiet forest and rugged terrain, and takes about one hour one-way without stops. But with so many incredible viewpoints and stops, you’ll want to take your time. Highlights include Johnston Canyon, Castle Mountain Viewpoint, and the famous Morant’s Curve. Wildlife sightings—like elk and bears—are common, especially in the early morning or evening. We encountered bears here multiple times so just drive with care! You may also see cyclists!

The Bow Valley Parkway (Highway 1A) has seasonal closures and travel restrictions, primarily to protect wildlife and enhance visitor experiences.

• From March 1 to June 25 to all cars, bicycles, and foot traffic, overnight from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. to give animals the space they need to thrive during spring.

• From May 1 to June 25, 2025 & August 28 to October 2 , to all public vehicles from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. as part of the Bow Valley Parkway Cycling Experience pilot program.

While the parkway remains open year-round, winter conditions such as snow and ice can lead to hazardous driving or temporary closures, so it’s important to check 511 Alberta or Parks Canada’s updates before traveling. Additionally, the road may be closed occasionally due to wildlife activity, wildfires, or maintenance work.
