Tips and considerations for hiking on your trip to Slovenia. Find all of these hikes and more in the full version of our travel guide!
In our opinion, the best time of year for hiking in Slovenia depends on whether you want to hike some of the more challenging alpine hikes. The alpine regions offer more strenuous day hikes and multi-day treks through some of the most incredible scenery in Slovenia. However, these will still be covered in snow through mid-June.
In the shoulder seasons (May, October), there is still ample opportunity for hiking some incredible day-hikes ranging from easy to challenging routes. You'll also have the benefit of less crowds in the shoulder season, and May offers the chance to see stunning wildflowers!
Vintgar Gorge - this is one of our top recommendations if you're visiting Lake Bled for more than one day. Don't forget to buy a ticket in advance. We recommend starting early in the morning to avoid the crowds!
Pericnik Waterfall - this hike takes you behind a majestic waterfall. It's an easy day trip from Lake Bled.
Rinka Waterfall - this short hike takes your from a parking lot at the end of Logar Valley up to the base of a 90 meter waterfall. As a bonus, there's a cafe at the end of the trail that serves drinks and snacks!
Ostrijca Viewpoint - the easier of two viewpoints above Lake Bled, providing incredible panoramic views of Bled Island and Castle. There is still a fair bit of elevation gain, which is why we don't categorize this as "easy".
Robanov Kot - easily accessible from Logar Valley, this trail climbs moderately up Robanov Kot valley. At the end, there is an incredibly peaceful mountain hut surrounded by towering mountains on three sides.
Slemenova Spica - park at the top of the Vrsic Pass and hike this moderate route to an alpine pasture with incredible mountain views on all sides. Unfortunately we weren't able to complete this one because there was still snow in late May, but it's on our list for next time!
Mount Visevnik - easily accessible from either Bohinj or Lake Bled, this is a challenging hike that gives you the full Julian Alps experience in the form of. day hike. The trail is STEEP but the views are 100% WORTH IT!
Valley of Seven Lakes - this 10-12 mile trek has over 3,000 feet of elevation and is often done as a multi-day route since there are huts along the trail. This trail features crystal-clear lakes, dramatic limestone peaks, and high mountain meadows that feel like they belong in a fairytale.
