What to Book 3 Months Out vs. Week-Of for Your Trip to Iceland

The booking cheat sheet so you don't show up and find everything sold out.

Iceland

Iceland has a small population and a massive tourism volume. The best stuff sells out months in advance. This is the list we wish we'd had the first time.

Book 3+ months out:

  • Your rental car or camper. Summer prices double the closer you get. Our go to provider is Happy Campers.

  • Sky Lagoon. Specifically the sunset slot as it books out first.

  • Blue Lagoon. The Retreat books furthest out; the standard Comfort ticket is usually available closer in.

  • Ice caves (winter only). The real blue ice caves (not the man-made Langjökull tunnel) book fast for Nov–March.

  • Katla Ice Cave. Available year-round but popular.

  • Glacier hikes on Sólheimajökull, Svínafellsjökull, or Vatnajökull. Icelandic Mountain Guides and Glacier Adventure are the operators.

  • Landmannalaugar or Þórsmörk tours. Summer-only, limited daily capacity.

  • Vestmannaeyjar ferry. If you want to do the islands, the ferry fills in summer.

  • Mid-range guesthouses on the east coast. Limited inventory, books out first.

Book 1 month out:

Book week-of:

  • Most campsites. They take walk-ups; no reservation needed.

  • Most restaurants in Reykjavík. Except Dill and a few high-end spots — book those earlier.

  • Northern Lights tours. Often refundable/reschedulable; book based on the forecast, not the calendar.

Day-of:

  • Gas stations and groceries (obviously, but people ask)

  • Most road-trip-worthy cafés and bakeries

Our booking hack: Most Iceland tour operators and third party tour platforms like Get Your Guide & Viator have flexible cancellation policies. Book the high-priority items the day you book your flights, even if your itinerary isn't finalized. You can usually reschedule within 24–48 hours of the tour without penalty.
