Welcome to one of the most surreal landscapes in the Highlands, a true geothermal wonderland. You'll be mesmerized by the rhyolite mountains, painted in shades of red, yellow, and green, all set against dark lava fields. The best way to experience it is on foot; I'd recommend the hike up Bláhnúkur for unbelievable panoramic views, which takes about 2-3 hours. Afterwards, reward yourself with a relaxing soak in the natural hot spring near the campsite—it’s an essential part of the experience. Just remember, getting here is an adventure in itself, as the rugged F-roads require a 4x4 vehicle.
We decided to hike this on a guided tour since our van did not have four-wheel drive, and it was incredible! It was the perfect day trip outside of Reykjavik if you want to add the highlands during the summertime. The hot springs afterwards felt so refreshing, and we had a ton of time between the hike and the hot springs to enjoy and did not feel rushed at all.
