I really feel I don't need to write much about the mighty Skógafoss. It's right by the ring road so DO NOT SKIP IT even though it might be crowded on a busy day. Also, when you visit, make sure you bring some waterproof clothes and go as close to it as you can - feel the power!

If you don't know it, Skógafoss is an incredibly majestic waterfall in South Iceland. Located near the village of Skógar, Skógafoss presents a dramatic sight with a 25 meter wide cascade that descends 60 meters as it creates a completely mesmerizing spray of mist (often creating a beautiful rainbow). Those interested in exploring even more can walk up a steep staircase to reach an observational platform above the cascade and witness seabirds nesting. This also marks the starting point (or ending) of an epic hike across the Fimmvörðuháls pass (check that out if you're interested in an adventure).

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: One of Iceland's most epic waterfalls.

  • Best season: Any. There's more water during summer/fall but winter/spring are still great.

  • Best time of day: During summertime, it can be in the shadow for sunset and sunrise (depending on the dates) but during winter time you'll want to be there whenever the sun is up.

  • Nice to know: Put on your waterproofs and go as close to it as you can. You can also walk up the stairs for a different viewpoint.
