Location:

The Marion’s Lookout is one of the most famous lookouts in Tasmania. From here you have an amazing view of Cradle Mountain, Dove Lake and the rest of the National park. The hike to get there starts from either the car‑park at Dove Lake or from the trailhead at Ronny Creek, inside Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park. The track is well‑signposted. To get to either Dove Lake or Ronny Creek the park offers shuttle buses. The tickets are included in the entry fee for the park. Outside of operating hours of the shuttle buses you can drive your own vehicle to the parking lots at Ronny Creek or Dove Lake.

Hike length:

  • From Ronny Creek: about 6.5‑7 km return, taking approximately 2.5‑3 hours there and back.

  • From Dove Lake car park: shorter option (via Wombat Pool/Lake Lilla, or the steeper direct ascent) – allow about 2‑3 hours return

Difficulty Level:

Moderate to challenging. The track is well‑formed for much of the way, but there is a steep final section with rock steps and a fixed chain to assist with the climb.

IMPORTANT: The weather can change quickly because you’re high on the alpine plateau. There have been fatalities over the past years due to hikers not being prepared for all weather. Even in summer the weather can change quickly and it can even snow! Always be prepared for all kinds of weather and don't attempt the hike if you don't feel fit enough.

Dogs allowed:

No, dogs are not permitted in the national park and therefore not allowed on this track.

Entry Fees:

Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park requires a visitor pass. Daily entry costs AUD $28 per adult and AUD $14 per child. Children under 5 enter free. A 2-month holiday pass is also available for AUD $55 per adult and AUD $27.50 per child, which is ideal if you plan to explore multiple trails and spend more time in the park.

More information:

The Marion’s Lookout Track rewards you with one of the most spectacular views in the park: from the lookout you’ll look out across Dove Lake, the nearby peaks (including Cradle Mountain and Little Horn) and Crater Lake.

Starting from Ronny Creek: you’ll follow the boardwalk along Ronny Creek, cross a bridge, move through rainforest beside Crater Creek, reach Crater Lake boatshed, then ascend the ridge to Marion’s Lookout. The very last few minutes include the steep climb with chains.

Alternatively, from Dove Lake you can begin via Wombat Pool and Lake Lilla then ascend to the lookout. The direct ascent from the Dove Lake circuit is shorter but much steeper and only recommended in good weather.

Important tip: Because the summit area is exposed and the weather unpredictable, bring warm layers, waterproof gear, and allow extra time.
