Make your best judgments!
Peru is considered safe for travelers, but some common-sense precautions can go a long way. In large cities like Lima and Cusco, petty theft and pickpocketing are the most common issues, especially in crowded markets, bus terminals, and touristy areas. Carry a crossbody bag with a zipper, keep valuables in your hotel safe, and avoid pulling out your phone on empty streets.
At night, use ride-share apps or hotel-arranged taxis instead of hailing one off the street. If hiking independently, always inform someone of your route, check the weather forecast, and stick to marked trails.
