For a taste of history paired with scenic views, the SteamRanger Heritage Railway is one of the most enjoyable experiences! The railway operates a range of steam and diesel-hauled trains, running from Mount Barker in the Adelaide Hills, over the southern Mt Lofty Ranges, and even down to Strathalbyn, Goolwa, and Port Elliot, with some services continuing on to Victor Harbor.

The highlight for us was the Southern Ocean Experience, which followed the line along the coastline with sweeping views of the water (this service is currently paused as of Sept 2025 due to rail works, but hopefully returns soon). If you're into locomotives, this one is definitely for you!
