Sugawara Shrine is a beloved destination located in Sakai, Osaka. The shrine is believed to have been established in the year 997 and is known for being one of the shrines that found a "Tenjin" wooden statue made by Sugawara-no-Michizane. It is also home to Niomon Gate (an Osaka tangible cultural property), built by Sakai gunsmiths in 1677, as well as a tea room, Kobaiken. Every year on January 10th, the much-loved Sakai Ebisu Shrine hosts "Toka Ebisu", where hundreds of thousands of people visit to pray for economic success and prosperity. During summertime, visitors can experience the magical sight of fireflies, and partake in the yearly firefly watching event held midway through June.
