Bannalpsee – Hidden Alpine Lake in Nidwalden
Bannalpsee (1,586 m / 5,203 ft) is a stunning alpine lake tucked away in the mountains above Wolfenschiessen in Canton Nidwalden. Far less crowded than the famous lakes of Central Switzerland, Bannalpsee offers pure alpine charm – turquoise waters, green meadows with grazing cows, and majestic peaks rising all around. It’s the perfect spot for a peaceful day trip or a family-friendly hike.
How to Get There
Travel to Wolfenschiessen (reachable by train from Lucerne).
From there, take the small cable car Fellboden–Bannalp (about 10 minutes).
Price: ~12 CHF one way / ~24 CHF return (adult).
At the top station, the lake is only a 15-minute walk.
Hiking Options
Easy lake circuit: a 1-hour loop around Bannalpsee – perfect for families, kids, and strollers.
