Established over 400 years ago during the Edo period, Hakone Amazake Tea House is a historic teahouse located along the ancient Tokaido Road in Hakone, Japan. The thatched-roof building exudes a rustic charm, offering visitors a glimpse into Japan's past. The teahouse is renowned for its signature amazake, a sweet, non-alcoholic rice beverage made from fermented rice, prepared using a recipe unchanged for centuries. In addition to amazake, the menu features freshly pounded mochi rice cakes, grilled over charcoal to achieve a soft, chewy texture. The interior includes a tatami mat room where guests can relax by removing their shoes and stretching their legs. The teahouse operates year-round, providing a serene retreat for travelers seeking a taste of traditional Japanese hospitality.

  • Amazake: Their signature sweet fermented rice drink. It is non-alcoholic, sugar-free, and traditionally served warm with a dash of ginger

  • Chikara Mochi: Pounded rice cakes. Order the Isobe (soy sauce and seaweed) or Kinako (sweet soybean powder) flavors

  • This is a perfect first stop after arriving at Hakone-Yumoto. Take Bus Line K toward Moto-Hakone and get off at the "Amazake-chaya" stop
