Toddler Safety Precautions

Iceland's landscapes are breathtaking, but they demand extra caution with young children.

Exploring Iceland with a 3 year old has been one of the most rewarding experiences and luckily everything went so smooth! However there were definitely a few times where I felt anxious about our toddler's safety in terms of the landscape, weather conditions, etc. Here are my safety tips:

  • Keep your toddler in a hiking carrier whenever your near cliffs, steep drop-offs, waterfalls, or uneven terrain.

  • Make sure they are wearing sturdy, waterproof shoes with good traction (paths are often wet, muddy, or slippery even on sunny days).

  • Stay behind all safety barriers and keep safe distances from edges.

  • Be extra cautious on any beaches. Sneaker waves can appear without warning, so never turn your back on the ocean and keep children a safe distance from the shoreline.

  • Even of flatter trails is recommended to keep your child within arm's reach since there are rivers close by, rocky terrain, and rarely any barriers.
