How to Check Road Conditions in Iceland
Use the official road map, live webcams, and weather data before driving.

Iceland
One of the biggest mistakes travelers make in Iceland is assuming road conditions are the same everywhere. They are not. It can be raining, icy, windy, or foggy in one area, while conditions are completely different 30 minutes away.
Before any longer drive, especially in winter, check road.is. This is the official traffic information map from the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, and it shows real-time road conditions around the country.
The map is color coded, so you can quickly see which roads are clear, slippery, difficult, or closed. This is much more useful than only checking the weather forecast because it shows what is actually happening on the roads.
đĄOne of the most useful features is the live road cameras. You can use them to see what conditions look like ahead of you before committing to a drive.
To find them, go to:
Road Conditions â Cameras
I recommend using road.is in three situations:
Before driving somewhere
Check your full route, not just the weather where you are starting from.During winter trips
Look for icy roads, snow, poor visibility, and closures before you leave. When the weather looks uncertain
Use the mapâs live cameras and wind speed data to decide whether it is safe to continue, wait, or change your plan.
đąYou can also use the app version, called FĂŚrð & Veður. It provides road conditions, road cameras, and weather information on your phone. The free version is enough for most travelers.
Bookmark road.is or download the app before your trip, so you already have it ready when you need it.
During your trip, this is one of the websites I recommend checking at least once a day.
