3 nature day trips from Tokyo for nature lovers and gentle explorers looking to escape the crowds of central Tokyo and discover Tokyo's quieter, greener side.
Day 1 - Discover two beautiful nature destinations beyond Tokyo, uncovering a lush valley surrounded by forested mountains and a ghibli-like waterfall reached by a gentle mountain hiking trail.
Here, you'll feel fully immersed in nature, sitting by the river, spotting herons, picnicking with breath-taking views of green mountain valleys, following forested trails to shrines and waterfalls, stopping at a mountainside noodle restaurant, and breathing in the fresh mountain air.
Day 2 - Slow down and learn the art of forest bathing in one of Japan's official forest bathing areas, designed to help you relax as you soak up the striking nature surrounding you - including bamboo groves, mountain shrines, seats and sun-loungers perfectly placed in quiet forests, and a quiet mountain town with a ghibli-like cafe.
Day 3 - Visit a quiet mountain village and discover peaceful waterfalls surrounded by green forests and trickling streams.
We've also included a few of our favourite local restaurants and cafes in these areas for you to enjoy :)
All locations are accessible by public transport. Each is about 1-2 hours from central Tokyo. If you want to spread them out a little more, the gorge and mountain trail in Day 1 can be split over 2 days instead if you prefer.
