Mount Rausu is a stratovolcano located on the Shiretoko Peninsula in Hokkaido, Japan. It's known for being the northeasternmost Holocene volcano on Hokkaido and is part of the 100 famous mountains in Japan. The mountain has erupted three times in the past 2,200 years, with significant events like a Plinian Eruption around 1,400 years ago. Every July 3, an opening festival marks the start of the climbing season on Mount Rausu. From the top of the mountain, the secenery with the contrast of ocean blue and mountain green is truely breathtaking. Plus, at the trailhead, there is a natural hotspring. You can take a bath right after hiking! Shirotoko is very famous for its variety of wildlives especially brown bears. I have seen them several times in Shiretoko, while hiking and even on the road. Please be careful and well prepared before going on hike.
