Location:

The Cradle Mountain Summit hike starts from Ronny Creek car park within Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park, north-west Tasmania. The trailhead is well-signposted and parking is available at the visitor center. There are shuttle buses running from the visitor center to Ronny Creek. The tickets for the shuttle bus are included in the park entry fee.

Hike length:

Approximately 12 km return, taking around 6–8 hours depending on pace and stops.

Difficulty Level:

Challenging — the track involves steep climbs, rocky and uneven terrain and exposed alpine sections. This hike is recommended for experienced walkers with a good level of fitness. Proper footwear, layers and plenty of water are essential.

IMPORTANT: The weather can change quickly because you’re high on the alpine plateau. There have been fatalities over the past years due to hikers not being prepared for all weather. Even in summer the weather can change quickly and it can even snow! Always be prepared for all kinds of weather and don't attempt the hike if you don't feel fit enough.

Dogs allowed:

No, dogs are not permitted in the national park.

Entry Fees:

Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park requires a visitor pass. Daily entry costs AUD $28 per adult and AUD $14 per child. Children under 5 enter free. A 2-month holiday pass is also available for AUD $55 per adult and AUD $27.50 per child, which is ideal if you plan to explore multiple trails and spend more time in the park.

More information:

This iconic hike leads you to the summit of Cradle Mountain (1,545 m), offering breathtaking 360-degree views over Dove Lake, Marion’s Lookout, Crater Lake, and the surrounding alpine wilderness.

The trail begins along well-formed tracks from Ronny Creek, moving through temperate rainforest and open alpine heath. As you gain elevation, the path becomes steeper and more rugged, with rock scrambles near the summit. Chains and handrails are provided at the steepest sections.

The climb rewards hikers with panoramic vistas of Tasmania’s wild northwest, and the summit is particularly spectacular at sunrise or on clear days. Weather can change rapidly in the alpine zone, so be prepared for wind, rain, or sudden temperature drops.

Tips:

  • Start early to avoid afternoon weather changes.

  • Bring plenty of water, snacks, layers and sun protection.

  • Wear sturdy hiking boots with good traction.

  • Allow extra time for photo stops — the views along the way are incredible.
