Damon BeckfordGuide to Finland

Surrounded by sandy beaches and the Baltic Sea on three sides, Hanko is Finland's southernmost town and one of the country's most beloved summer destinations. Originally developed as a seaside spa resort in the late 19th century, Hanko still has an elegant coastal atmosphere, with historic villas, long promenades, marinas, and some of Finland's best beaches. You can even surf here when the wind blows from the south or east!

The town is made for exploring on foot or by bike. Spend your day strolling along the waterfront, relaxing on beaches like Bellevue, browsing boutique shops, or enjoying lunch at one of the many cafés and seaside restaurants. The lively guest harbour is another highlight, especially in summer when it's filled with sailing boats and waterfront terraces.

Hanko also offers plenty for nature lovers. You can walk coastal trails, visit historic bunkers and old fortifications, climb the water tower for panoramic views, or head to the iconic southernmost tip of mainland Finland. Birdwatchers are also drawn here, as Hanko is one of the country's best places to observe migrating birds during spring and autumn.

Summer is when Hanko truly comes alive, with festivals, regattas, outdoor events, and a relaxed holiday atmosphere that attracts visitors from across Finland. While many people visit as a day trip, I'd recommend staying at least one night to experience the town in the quieter evening hours, when the beaches empty, the sun sets over the sea, and Hanko's unique charm is at its best.
