Looking for that classic Finnish summer island feeling without leaving the city? Pihlajasaari is where many locals head when the weather turns warm. With its sandy beach, rugged rocks, forest trails, and sea views in every direction, it’s the perfect place to slow down and soak up the summer vibes.

The island is actually made up of two islands connected by a small bridge, offering a mix of lively beach life and quiet nature corners where you can find your own spot by the water.

How to get there:

  • In summer (mid-May to August), a private water bus runs from Merisatamanranta (next to Café Carusel) and Ruoholahti pier.

  • The ride takes about 10–15 minutes, and tickets can be bought on board (around €8 return).

  • This is only a summer island – no ferries outside the season.

Good to know & local tips:

  • Stay overnight: There’s a small camping area where you can pitch your tent and wake up right by the sea – such a cool way to experience the island without the crowds.

  • Sauna with a view: There’s also 2 seaside saunas you can book for private use. It’s super popular in summer, so book early if you want the experience. Book from the links.

  • Best beach in Helsinki? Pihlajasaari is home to one of the nicest sandy beaches in the city. There’s also a separate nudist beach if you’re feeling adventurous.

  • Picnic & grill spots: Bring your own food and enjoy the public grills – it’s a classic local way to spend a summer day.

  • Hidden spots: Walk beyond the beach and explore the quiet cliffs, forest trails, and old villas. The western side is perfect for sunset views.

  • Prepare ahead: There’s a small summer café, but it’s always smart to bring your own water, snacks, and anything you need for the day.
