📱Best Apps for Indonesia
Apps we need for our trip to Indonesia:
Julian De Rosa
East Java, Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, Indonesia
Here we go:
🚗 Grab:
Right at the airport in Bali, you'll find suspicious taxi drivers who will take you anywhere at inflated prices. But don't be fooled: Grab drivers will also pick you up at the airport. At transparent prices.
By the way: Grab is not available everywhere in Indonesia. However, it works in Bali and in the larger cities (e.g., Mataram, Surabaya).
🚗 Gojak:
We never needed it. But it would be a good alternative to Grab and is widely used in Indonesia.
🚌12Go Asia:
Perfect for downloading bus and ferry tickets directly to your cell phone. We needed it again and again on our travels. In Indonesia, however, we rarely used it, as local providers were often cheaper. But it's always a good thing to compare prices.
🗺️Google Maps:
A must-have on any trip. Pin our POI on your Google Maps. Download offline maps for Bali, Java, Lombok, etc. in advance.
💬Google Translate:
In the more touristy places, English is spoken reasonably well almost everywhere, but as soon as you travel to more rural areas, it becomes difficult. But to be on the safe side, download Indonesian (Bahasa) on Google Translate. Good for conversations or translating menus.
💬WhatsApp:
Widely used in Indonesia for communicating with drivers and hostels. We needed it again and again.
🛏️Booking.com/ Agoda / Airbnb:
Classic for accommodation with worldwide offers. HERE
💱Wise/Revolut:
We have both and they were extremely useful. You can pay in so many currencies and withdraw money free of charge. We also tried to transfer money to Indonesia (for the whale shark tour) via our local bank, but it didn't work. With Revolut, it took just one day.
📱NordVPN:
For secure internet access on public Wi-Fi; handy for security or streaming purposes. HERE
📱Airalo:
We almost always got a SIM card via Airalo. Super easy, online right after landing. Top up when you need it again. HERE
📱MyTelkomsel:
If you want to get a local SIM card, Telkomsel is the right choice. We tried Telkomsel and had a good experience. You can get a small data package at the airport (or even better, at a local SIM shop) and top it up later (cheaper!) via the app.
🎟️ GetYourGuide (Activities & Tours)
Use GetYourGuide to find and book tours, activities, and tickets in Indonesia.
Great for day trips, temples, boat tours, cooking classes, and family-friendly experiences - with instant confirmation and mobile tickets. HERE
Extra tip:
📱 iPhone calculator as a currency converter (IDR ↔ EUR)
Simply enter 100,000 IDR in EUR into the calculator, for example, and the iPhone will automatically convert the amount.
Works without an extra app and is super handy when you're on the go.
