North Vietnam, Vietnam

Planning to bring a drone to explore Vietnam’s breathtaking landscapes? From the limestone karsts of Ha Long Bay to the rice terraces of Cao Bang or the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An - the aerial views are unreal.

But here’s the thing: Vietnam has much stricter drone regulations than many Southeast Asian countries.

Overview: Drone Laws in Vietnam (2025)

⚠️ The Important Part First

Technically, ALL drone flights in Vietnam require prior permission - whether recreational or commercial.

This includes:

  • Small hobby drones

  • Travel content creation

  • Social media filming

  • Professional productions

Approval must be obtained from Vietnamese authorities before flying.

Key Rules & Restrictions

📄 Flight Permission Required

You must apply for a flight permit in advance (usually several weeks before your planned flight). Flying without approval can lead to fines, confiscation of your drone, or more serious consequences.

⬆️ Max Altitude

Typically limited to 120 m – 150 m, depending on approval conditions.

👀 Visual Line of Sight

You must maintain direct visual contact with your drone at all times.

✈️ Airport Distance

Stay well clear of airports and military airfields. Vietnam has many restricted zones around cities.

🚫 No-Fly & Sensitive Areas

Strictly prohibited near:

  • Military installations

  • Government buildings

  • Border areas

  • Ports

  • Large public gatherings

  • Strategic infrastructure

Border regions (especially near China, Laos, and Cambodia) are particularly sensitive.

🌙 Daylight Only

Night flying is generally not permitted unless explicitly authorized.

🚗 No Flying from Moving Vehicles

Operating a drone from cars or motorbikes is not allowed.

⚠️ Reality Check for Travelers (How we did it)

  • We flew, but not over crowds of people.

  • Ask the locals: we asked a landowner in Ninh Binh if it was okay for us to fly over his field.

  • Be careful at the border with China, do not fly over the border, and do not stay in the air for long.

  • fly with common sense

  • we never had problems

So… Should You Bring Your Drone?

If you:

  • Plan professional content production → Apply for official permission

  • Just want casual travel shots → Be aware of legal risks

  • Want zero stress → Consider leaving it at home

Vietnam is stunning from the ground too ❤️

Important Disclaimer

This is only a general guideline for 2026. Regulations can change at any time. Always check official Vietnamese aviation authorities before flying. Fly responsibly and respectfully.
