Just one hour south of Stockholm, Gålö feels like stepping into a quieter, wilder side of the Swedish archipelago. This nature reserve is where pine forests meet open meadows, rugged cliffs roll into the Baltic Sea, and sandy beaches invite you to slow down.

On my visit, I hiked a 5 km loop here in winter, and I was honestly surprised by how much variety was packed into such a short distance. In just those five kilometers, the landscape kept changing: forest sections, open coastal stretches, rocky viewpoints overlooking the Baltic Sea, and small peaceful clearings. It felt like doing multiple hikes in one. The route was filled with beautiful viewpoints, perfect for taking a break, soaking in the views, or capturing that classic archipelago feeling.

The trails are well-marked and range from short, easy walks to longer routes that take you deeper into the reserve. In summer, grazing cows help maintain the open landscape and add to the timeless, rural atmosphere.

For photographers and outdoor lovers, this place is magic during golden hour. The warm light over the water, the twisted pine trees along the shoreline, and the wide Baltic horizon create endless storytelling opportunities.

Good to know: During the summer period (1/4–30/9), there is a parking fee. Outside of this period, parking is free.
