The Gates of Minsk are the twin towers that greet you upon arrival at the city’s central railway station. Built in 1953, they’re one of Minsk’s most iconic architectural landmarks and symbolize the entrance to the capital. Designed by Boris Rubanenko, these majestic 11-story structures are a vivid example of Stalinist classicism, combining ornate columns and historic details with impressive size.

Originally, the towers were crowned with spires and sculptures representing different facets of Belarusian life: a soldier, a worker, a farmer, and an engineer. While some original decorations were removed for restoration, today the right tower features the historic coat of arms, and the left tower showcases the largest clock in Belarus, a century-old German masterpiece. In the evening, the towers are beautifully illuminated, offering a great spot for striking photos.

This area is more than just an architectural highlight—it's a busy hub connecting train, bus, and metro lines. If you're arriving at the city by train or coach, this is likely the first sight you'll see. Privokzalnaya Square, just outside, is perfect for a short stroll, and there’s an underground passage with shops and cafés for refreshments.
Tip for tourists:

  • Visit in the late afternoon or evening when the lighting emphasizes the towers' dramatic look.

  • The “Gates” are close to other key sights like Independence Square — ideal for starting a walking tour of central Minsk.

  • Guided city tours often include this location, making it easy to learn more about Minsk’s Soviet architectural heritage.
