How Expensive is South and Central America
This will give you a rough breakdown of costs for your trip!
Britt and Mitch Worldwide
Latin America, Peru
Affordable Countries
Bolivia – Very Cheap
Meals: $2–4
Hostels: $6–10
Transport: very cheap
One of the cheapest countries in all of Latin America. We didn’t realise how much we were going to love it — incredible experiences at an unbeatable price.
Nicaragua – Very Cheap
Meals: $2–5
Hostels: $8–12
Great value with low daily costs, although there isn’t a huge amount to do unless you’re really into surfing.
Honduras – Very Cheap
Meals: $2–4
Hostels: $10–15
Except for Utila and Roatán (the islands are pricier). We didn’t explore much of Honduras because it’s quite dangerous at the moment.
Guatemala – Cheap
Meals: $3–6
Hostels: $8–15
Transport is very cheap, and there are so many incredible tours — though those can add up. Easily one of the best countries in the world.
El Salvador – Cheap
Meals: $3–5
Hostels: $10–15
Surf towns are slightly more expensive, but overall it’s a very affordable and up-and-coming country. We were blown away by how warm and welcoming the local people are.
Mid-Range Countries
Ecuador – Low to Mid Range
Meals: $3–6
Hostels: $9–12
The Galápagos Islands are quite expensive, although you can do them semi-cheap. Cruises are pricey unless you book last-minute a day or two before.
Colombia – Mid Range
Meals: $3–7
Hostels: $10–15
Cities are affordable, but there are plenty of amazing restaurants and hotels — and we couldn’t help but try them!
Peru – Mid Range
Meals: $3–7 (you can often get full 3-course meals for this!)
Hostels: $8–15
Day-to-day costs are cheap, but tours like Machu Picchu increase the budget. There’s so much to do in Peru that expenses can add up quickly.
Mexico – Mid Range
Meals: $4–8
Hostels: $10–18
Inland areas are cheaper, while tourist zones can get pricey. But the lesser-known towns and hidden spots are incredible, check our map for all our favourites! Mexico is easily one of our favourite countries in the world.
Expensive Country (Western Prices)
Costa Rica – Expensive
Meals: $8–15
Hostels: $15–25
The most expensive country in Central America. They call it the “Switzerland of Central America” for a reason!
All prices are listed in USD to keep things simple for travellers from around the world.
