Crete, Greece
While many people in Crete speak English, learning a few basic Greek words can go a long way in creating meaningful connections with locals. We’ve found that even the simplest phrases are often met with warm smiles and genuine appreciation. Here are some useful expressions to help you navigate daily encounters, whether you're ordering a meal, asking for directions, or simply showing gratitude:
Kaliméra (Καλημέρα) – Good morning
Kalispéra (Καλησπέρα) – Good evening
Efcharistó (Ευχαριστώ) – Thank you
Parakaló (Παρακαλώ) – Please / You’re welcome
Yásas (Γειά σας) – Hello / Goodbye (formal or polite)
Ti kánete? (Τι κάνετε;) – How are you?
Miláte Angliká? (Μιλάτε Αγγλικά;) – Do you speak English?
Póso kostízei? (Πόσο κοστίζει;) – How much does it cost?
Neró, parakaló (Νερό, παρακαλώ) – Water, please
To logariasmó, parakaló (Τον λογαριασμό, παρακαλώ) – The bill, please
We encourage travelers to try out these phrases—it’s not just practical, it’s part of the fun of immersing yourself in the Cretan culture.
