Tipping in Cretan Tavernas

Tipping in Crete (and across Greece) is appreciated, though not mandatory. It’s more about showing appreciation than following strict rules.

Here’s how to handle it:

How Much to Tip?

  • For a casual meal: Round up the bill or leave 5–10%, depending on service.

Example: If your bill is €24, you can leave €25 or €26.

  • For excellent service or a special meal: Leave 10–15%.

  • Coffee/snack at a café: A small tip of €0.50 to €1 is perfectly fine.

  • Large groups: Consider a larger tip or pooling €1–2 per person, especially if you lingered or requested special service.

When & How to Leave the Tip

  • Cash is preferred, even if you pay the bill by card.

  • Leave it on the table or hand it directly to the server with a smile and a “ευχαριστώ” (efharistó – thank you).

  • If paying with card, ask beforehand if you can include a tip—many card machines don’t have a tipping option.

  • Friendly Tip: Cretan hospitality is warm and generous. Sometimes they’ll bring you a free dessert or raki at the end of your meal. A good tip is a nice way to say thanks, especially when the generosity goes above and beyond.
