Tasca and Couvert Explained
Where locals actually eat and how local dining works

If you want to eat like a local in Lisbon, you’ll come across tascas and something called couvert.
A tasca is a small, traditional Portuguese restaurant where locals go for simple, honest food. Expect:
Short simple menus
Daily specials (prato do dia)
A busy, no-frills atmosphere
At most places, you’ll also be given bread, olives or cheese at the table. This is called couvert and it’s not free.
You only pay for what you eat
If you don’t want it, just say no
Tip: if a place feels a bit chaotic, very local and focused on a few dishes, you’re probably in a great tasca. Go when they open, usually around 12pm – they fill up fast around 1–2pm.
