Government House in Sydney, built in 1845, is the official residence of the Governor of New South Wales. Located beside the Royal Botanic Gardens on Conservatorium Road, it overlooks Sydney Harbour and sits just behind the Opera House. The building was designed in a Gothic Revival style by Edward Blore—who also contributed to Buckingham Palace—with assistance from colonial architect Mortimer Lewis. Made from local sandstone, its design features turrets, battlements, and a grand entrance. It stands on the site of a previous Government House, originally built in 1788, now marked by the Museum of Sydney. Over time, it has hosted countless official ceremonies, receptions, and functions. Between 1901 and 1914, it even housed the first five Governors-General of Australia. After a period of conservation and other use, the Governor returned in 2011. Today, visitors can explore its stately rooms, historic furnishings, artwork, and memorabilia through free guided tours on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
