Madeira is paradise for many – but sadly, stray and injured animals are still common across the island. Here’s how you can take action and help, whether it’s an emergency, a sterilisation need, or a neglected animal.

🚨 Emergency: Injured or Sick Animals

Officially, injured or sick animals are the responsibility of the local fire and rescue department (Bombeiros).

• They’ll transport the animal to a vet or a municipal shelter.

• Stay with the animal until help arrives if you can.

• If it’s urgent and you can afford it, take the animal straight to a vet yourself.

🐾 Stray / Abandoned Animals

If you find a stray dog, cat, kitten, or puppy, here are steps you can take:

1. Call the local Bombeiros – they might assist depending on the situation.

2. Take the animal to a vet for a check-up.

4. Contact shelters and vet clinics directly.

5. If safe, temporarily house the animal until help is arranged.
