The Morteratsch Glacier, part of the Bernina Range, lies at around 2,000 m and is one of the most photogenic glaciers in the Engadin. One of the best ways to experience it is on the hike from Morteratsch station to the Boval Hut — a 2–3 hour trail that follows the glacier and offers fantastic views of the ice, crevasses, and surrounding peaks.

For photographers, this area is a true gem. Early morning light beautifully illuminates the peaks and glacier, while mid-morning brings striking contrasts and textures on the ice. In summer, deep blue tones shimmer through the glacier, and alpine flowers along the path add color to your compositions. In autumn, golden larches stand out against the icy landscape, and in winter, the scene turns into a minimalist wonderland — perfect for moody black-and-white shots.

It’s worth exploring off the main path now and then to find new perspectives for your photos. The hike to the glacier tongue or up to the Boval Hut above the glacier are both unforgettable adventures that capture the wild beauty of this valley. Along the way, glacial streams, meltwater waterfalls, and even wildlife like ibex or marmots can add unique touches to your shots.
