When we arrive in Rarotonga, we always hire a car and pay the extra fee for it to be left at the airport (keys in the sunvisor styles). With airport transfer being around $30-40 per person, it works out cheaper (for 2+ people) and much more convenient to have your own car! No need to wait around after your flight for the crammed shuttle van to load up and do multiple drop offs before getting to your stop.

We found the most affordable cars are from Rarocars, their cheapest range is $40 per day (if booked for 7+ days) and for them to leave the car at the airport is only $20 extra (and an extra $20 to leave at the airport when you leave). We normally get scooters as well which are around $20-25 plus a day (read our guide on how to hire scooters and license process).

Another tip we have is to make sure you choose your travel insurance to include a decent car excess coverage and to make sure it matches the excess of the rental company you decide to go with. Note - if you have an issue with the car, you will still need to pay the excess and then claim it back from your insurance company. You will need to show your travel insurance document to the rental car if you choose a zero insurance option. Otherwise, we always strongly suggest to get car insurance (and travel insurance). Also check if you are covered on your scooter as they are generally 125cc there and in NZ for example, you might only be covered if you ride a 49cc on a car license). Last tip - always take photos of your rental vehicle on pick up & drop off.
