For a small entrance fee, you can visit one of the most beautiful churches in Iceland, and one of the very few made of stone. The stone was carried from the other side of the bay, dragged over the frozen water during the winter. An archaeological excavation near the church brought to light the earliest Icelandic monastery, and probably the one where the most precious Icelandic mediaeval manuscript was written, Flateyjarbók, Oxy copy of which can be seen at the little exhibition in the building behind the church, where tickets can be purchased.
