Gordale Scar is one of the Yorkshire Dales’ most dramatic limestone gorges — a towering ravine with sheer cliffs and a waterfall hidden inside. Formed by ancient glacial meltwater carving through the rock, it feels wild and untouched, almost like stepping into another world.

We followed the short walk from Malham and were stunned by the scale of the cliffs — they rise more than 100 metres overhead. In summer, brave climbers scramble up beside the falls, but even from the base it’s spectacular, with water tumbling through the gorge.

Insider tip: The ground can be slippery, especially after rain. Wear good boots, and if you want to link it with Malham Cove and Janet’s Foss, the three make a perfect half-day circular walk from Malham village.
