Animals in Fiji
It can be shocking at first...
Katy
Fiji
Straight up, Fiji has a LOT of stray animals roaming the streets. You might be shocked at the number of sickly dogs you see when you first arrive.
Economic constraints, inadequate, unregulated breeding, and a lack of proper care also contribute to widespread abandonment, leaving many dogs hungry and diseased.
In saying this, most street dogs are harmless and are often "shoo-ed" away easily.
Non-profit groups like Animals Fiji, PASH, SPCA, and The Greater Good Foundation are all doing amazing work to provide education and affordable neutering around the country.
Cows and horses are commonly tied to temporary poles or trees, as there aren't many fenced paddocks like you would find at home. When driving, keep an eye out for the occasional cow, horse or goat that might've escaped.
