Tips & Safety
Dine on Skadarlija Street — the oldest street in Belgrade.
This charming cobblestone street is packed with traditional Serbian restaurants, live music, and tons of character. It’s the perfect place to taste local dishes, sip rakija, and soak up the bohemian soul of the city.
Don’t assume everyone speaks English.
The younger generation and most people in the LGBTQ+ community usually speak good English, so you’ll have no problem connecting in bars or clubs. But outside of that — in taxis, small shops, or with older locals — English isn’t always a given. A few words of Serbian (like hvala for “thank you”) will go a long way.
Safety first
Belgrade is generally safe, but stay aware, especially in less touristy areas or late at night.
Avoid public displays of affection
Same-sex PDA in Belgrade is still a sensitive topic. Holding hands is usually fine in busy tourist areas, but kissing or more intimate gestures in public can attract unwanted attention.
Use dating apps
As a tourist, you’ll probably get plenty of attention from local men, especially if you host. Many prefer to stay discreet, keeping their identity private for safety or personal reasons. Be patient, respectful, and understand that discretion is part of the local dating culture.
Video calls before meeting are common
Many locals will want to have a quick video call before meeting up. It’s not just shyness — it’s a way to make sure you’re genuine and to filter out fake profiles. Consider it part of the etiquette and a smart safety step for both sides.
Free public transport.
In Belgrade, public transport is free for everyone — locals and tourists alike. Hop on buses, trams, or trolleybuses to get around the city.
It is legal to smoke inside the restaurants
In Serbia, smoking indoors at restaurants is legal, so many locals smoke inside. If you’re a non-smoker, it’s usually better to sit outside. You’ll enjoy fresher air, your clothes won’t absorb smoke, and you can still soak up the street atmosphere.
