Located at the southernmost tip of the North Island, Cape Palliser is a rugged coastal area, also called Mātakitaki-a-Kupe, the gazing of Kupe. The red and white striped lighthouse stands over the dramatic cliffs and wild seas. You can climb the 253 steps to reach the lighthouse, for a beautiful view of the surrounding area, particularly at sunrise or sunset. You may also be lucky to spot fur seals on the rocks or dolphins playing in the waves. The road to Cape Palliser follows the dramatic coastline and makes for a beautiful scenic drive.

Follow State Highway 2 to Featherston, then take the Western Lake Road and Cape Palliser Road to the coast. The final section of the drive includes some gravel roads.

Remember: Dress warmly and be prepared for a change in weather as it can be unpredictable and very windy at Cape Palliser. The lighthouse steps can also be slippery in the rain, so take caution.

Personal tip: Seriously, be prepared for the wind - look how windy it was when we climbed to the lighthouse…

Pronunciation: Mātakitaki-a-Kupe - MAA-taa-kee-taa-kee - aah - koo-peh
