Kajaani Airport is a small and hassle-free airport about 8 km from Kajaani city center, making it super easy to reach. There are direct flights from Helsinki, and it’s a handy starting point if you're heading to explore Kainuu region, Suomussalmi, or even Kuusamo. Since it’s a small airport, everything runs smoothly—from check-in to luggage pick-up. Taxis and rental cars are available right outside, and the drive to the city takes around 10-15 minutes.

Kajaani Castle Ruins

historisch

Medieval castle ruins in Finland

The Kajaani Castle Ruins, located in Kajaani, Finland, were built in the early 17th century on an island in the Kajaani River. Constructed by King Charles IX of Sweden to protect the region of Kainuu, the castle saw various uses over the years, from being a prison to a noble residence. However, during the Great Northern War, Russian forces destroyed the castle with explosives in 1719. Today, only its roofless ruins remain, serving as a reminder of its once strategic significance and turbulent history.

It's a charming piece of history nestled in Kajaani, offering a glimpse into the past with its architectural beauty.

Pekka Heikkinen & Kumpp.

Cafe

Traditional Finnish bakery since 1913

Pekka Heikkinen & Kumpp. is a traditional bakery and confectionery located in Kajaani, Finland, with over a century of history.

Puu-uunileipä, ryebread baked in a wood heated oven, is the most popular souvenir from Kainuu. Bread culture in Kainuu is very strong and bread has always been the best gift to take to friends when travelling. The baking of Puu-uunileipä is the baker’s proof of professional skills and the pride of the bakery.

Founded in 1913 by master baker Pekka Heikkinen and his wife Anna Loviisa, the business has been passed down through four generations, continuing to serve customers with delicious baked goods. They work by the teaching of their grandmother Saima Heikkinen “Hyvvää sen olla pittää!” which roughly translates to “It has to be good every time!”. From fresh bread to sweet treats, they offer a variety of products.

Steamship S/S Kouta

Touren

Northernmost steamship cruise in Europe

Can you hear the steam whistle calling? This is the authentic steamship experience!

The Steamship Kouta in Kajaani, Finland offers a unique cruise experience aboard a historic steamboat Kouta. Enjoy scenic views of Oulujärvi lake while sipping on a drink and listening locals musicians play music. You can even go below the deck and have a look at the steam engine being operated. What a cool experience! Highly recommended.

They offer public and charter cruises during the summer season.

I took the evening cruise (37€) and it was absolutely lovely.

You can also take a full day cruise to Ärjänsaari Island for 50€, which is heaven on earth on a nice summer day.

Ärjä

Fotospot

A Finnish paradise island next to Kajaani

Ärjä is one of my absolute favorite places in Finland, and honestly, it’s crazy how few people or even locals know about it.
It’s a large island in Lake Oulujärvi, Finland’s fourth largest lake, near Kajaani. The island is known for its beautiful sandy beaches and rare dune landscapes. The water is crystal clear and perfect for swimming on warm summer days.

Getting there is pretty easy. During summer, the historic steamship S/S Kouta runs a few trips a week from Kajaani harbour next to the center of the city to Ärjä. You can also book a ride with local boat operators like Luonnollisesti Oulujärvi (they have accommodations as well). If you have your own boat, you’re free to explore at your own pace, but keep in mind that Oulujärvi is a big lake and weather can change quickly.

Once you arrive, you’ll find peace and nature at its finest. There are no shops or cafes (there is a cafe, but it's not always open) on the island, so bring everything you need. Camping is allowed, and there are dry toilets near the main landing areas. The sandy beaches and peaceful pine forests make Ärjä perfect for swimming, hiking, or just relaxing away from the crowds. Don't miss the chance to visit the sheep of Ärjänsaari, which are on the island for summer work between June 6th and August 15th, 2022. The island is part of the Rokua Geopark ridge formation, offering a unique natural experience.
