A holy place has stood on this spot since 394 AD. The church is fully restored, modern, comfortable for pilgrims, but the “old” part is clearly visible, with supporting columns left in place, but in total safety. The mosaics contained within the church are nothing short of extraordinary. They are both of the “decorative” type, with geometric figures made to embellish the floor, and of the “narrative” type. I would have spent hours looking at them. The oldest was completed in 531 AD and was only brought to light in 1976, when the mosaic that had been superimposed on it in 597 AD was removed.

La chiesa è completamente restaurata, moderna, confortevole per i pellegrini, ma è ben visibile la parte “vecchia”, con colonne portanti lasciate al loro posto, ma in totale sicurezza. I mosaici contenuti all’interno della chiesa sono a dir poco straordinari. Sono sia di tipo “decorativo”, con figure geometriche fatte per abbellire il pavimento, che di tipo “narrativo. Sarei rimasto ore a osservarli. Il più antico fu completato nel 531 d.C. ed è stato portato alla luce solo nel 1976, quando fu rimosso il mosaico che gli era stato sovrapposto nel 597 d.C.
