If you’re after a peaceful spot just outside of Wānaka, Glendhu Bay is a favourite of mine. The bay is sheltered and calm, which makes it the perfect place to take a paddleboard or kayak out — you’ll often have glassy conditions here in the mornings and evenings. In summer it’s a great swimming spot, and there’s a gentle lakeside track if you’d prefer a walk with mountain views.

Good to know:

• There’s a car park right by the lake, and public toilets available.

• The bay connects to the Millennium Track (Lakeside Trail), so you can walk or bike all the way back into Wānaka if you’re up for a longer adventure.

• It’s a popular spot with campers in summer, but still way quieter than the main Wānaka lakefront.

• Best time for calm water is early morning or late evening — perfect for paddleboarding.
