If you want to experience some local events during your trip, try to plan your visit around one of these! Here are some cool events happening in Southern Finland:

Spring

  • May Day celebration: April 30 - May 1. Amajor celebration with student parades, picnics and public festivities. Students are wearing crazy colorful overalls and whitecaps. There will also be May Day Market at the Market Square with stalls selling balloons, flowers, sweets and traditional Finnish Vappu treats.

  • Local fairs: March marks the start of spring fairs and markets popping up all over the places.

Summer

  • Turku Medieval Market: Held every summer on the banks of the Aura River, the Medieval Market is one of Turku’s most beloved traditions. The whole riverside turns into a lively medieval village with market stalls, knights, craftsmen, and performances. You can browse handmade goods, watch sword fights, or grab a warm flatbread and mead while listening to old-time music.

  • Midsummer (Juhannus) June20–21. If you want to experience a real Finnish Midsummer, head over to Seurasaari! This island turns into a magical little bubble of bonfires, traditional music, folk dancing and old-school Finnish vibes.

  • Ruisrock (Turku): One of the oldest rock festivals in Europe, Ruisrock takes place on Ruissalo Island, just a short bus ride from the city center.

  • Sleepy Head Day (Naantali): This quirky Finnish celebration happens every July in Naantali, near Turku. Early in the morning, one chosen “sleepyhead” is thrown into the sea as a wake-up call. The day continues with music, parades, and cheerful local festivities.

  • Helsinki Day: Museums open their doors, free concerts everywhere etc.

  • Summer Peace (Turku): Held in the atmospheric courtyard of Turku Castle, Summer Peace is an indie and alternative music festival that brings together creativity, art, and a relaxed summer vibe.

  • Little Italy Festival: Every summer, Turku turns a little Italian with this fun food and culture event by the river. Expect Italian wines, pasta, gelato, and live music

  • DBTL (Turku): Turku’s biggest city festival, DBTL, takes over the city center every summer with concerts, food stalls, and parties that last for days. The main stage is usually set by the Aura River, surrounded by lively summer terraces and good energy

  • Air Guitar World Championship: A quirky event celebrating the art of air guitar performance.

  • Savonlinna Opera Festival: Held in a medieval castle, this festival is ahighlight for opera enthusiasts.

  • Pitsiviikko, Rauma: Cultural events & lace making demonstrations.

Autumn

  • Pumpkin park (Salo): Just a short drive from Turku, this cozy autumn event is a must for pumpkin lovers. The fields are filled with colorful pumpkins of all sizes, and the farm is beautifully decorated for the season. It’s

  • Turku International Market: Every year, the streets of Turku fill with flavors from around the world during the International Market. Dozens of vendors from different countries set up their stalls along the river, selling everything from French pastries to Greek olives and Spanish churros.

  • Turku Day: The day is packed with free events, open museums, music performances, and fireworks over the river in the evening.

  • Helsinki international Grand Market: International food stands, handicrafts and textiles.

Winter

  • Christmas markets: Christmas markets start popping up across Finland in late November, bringing festive lights, local treats, and cozy stalls to towns big and small. Turku’s Old Great Square is a classic, Rauma and Uusikaupunki have their charming historic markets, and Naantali adds a small-town festive feel with activities for kids.

  • LuxHelsinki. An annual light art festival in Helsinki.

  • Finland declares Christmas peace (Turku): A truly special Finnish tradition that takes place every Christmas Eve at noon in Turku’s Old Great Square. The ceremony is broadcast nationwide, and if you’re in Turku, you can experience it live among the locals gathered in the square.

  • Christmas opening: The biggest Christmas opening happens in Helsinki, but Turku is also worth seeing. These usually happen around the same time when Christmas markets open their doors.

  • The Path of Light: In early December Turku transforms into a glowing winter wonderland thanks to The Path of Light. This walking route follows the Aura River from the Cathedral to the harbor, lined with sparkling lights and art installations
