Coyote Gulch, located in the heart of Escalante's canyon country, is a popular backpacking destination and honestly my favorite place in Utah. Being in the alcoves is seriously mind blowing.

There are multiple routes down into Coyote Gulch and would suggest researching all prior to planning -- Sneaker Route/Water Tank, Crack in the Wall, Hurricane Wash, Redwell. Many will go in the crack in the wall and out the sneaker route.

I've attached the sneaker route to the website. Its my actual track from Gaia. Please know this is NOT A BEGINNER ROUTE. It requires nearly a 200-foot scramble in and out of Coyote Gulch, and if you're backpacking, you will want a rope. I've done it with a day pack without a rope and its the one time I've ever had a panic attack on a trail. Sometimes there will be a rope in place, however you cannot depend on anyone else. I've included two photos of me going up and down the ropes at the end.

Hurricane Wash is very benign, but a long slog through sand with little water sources.

If you are going to camp, a permit is required. Backcountry permits are required for all overnight stays in the Escalante District of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Obtain permits at the Escalante Interagency Visitor Center in the town of Escalante or at one of the entry trailheads. Day use does not require a backcountry permit, but please sign the trail register.
