For Travelers with Smartphones
One of the most useful tools during your trip to Japan is a transportation IC card, which works not only for trains and subways but also at convenience stores. Among them, the most recommended option is Suica. The best choice depends on your situation.
For travelers with a smartphone, Mobile Suica is highly recommended. If you have an iPhone or certain Android devices, you can easily register through Apple Wallet or Google Pay. Simply tap your phone at the ticket gate to pass through, and top up your balance directly through the app.
Since there’s no need to carry a physical card, you also avoid the risk of losing it, making it very safe for travelers. However, please note that Android devices must support FeliCa (NFC technology), so check compatibility in advance.

For Children without Smartphones or Non-Compatible Devices
For children who don’t have a smartphone, or for travelers whose phones are not compatible, the Welcome Suica is the best option. It has a distinctive red design and is valid for up to 28 days. There is no deposit required, so it’s perfect for short-term stays.
Where to buy Welcome Suica:
・Narita Airport Station (JR East ticket office “Midori no Madoguchi” and ticket machines)
・Haneda Airport Terminal 3 Station (JR East ticket machines)
・Major JR East stations such as Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Ikebukuro (ticket offices and machines)
You can recharge it at train station ticket machines or convenience stores. However, since it expires after the validity period, it’s best to use up the balance before leaving Japan.
