The National Elk Refuge in Wyoming is a wildlife sanctuary established in 1912 to protect one of the largest elk herds in the country. Spanning 24,700 acres, the refuge provides a winter home for around 7,500 elk who migrate from as far as Yellowstone National Park. Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the refuge also hosts bison, bighorn sheep, and various bird species. Visitors can enjoy horse-drawn sleigh rides during the winter months to get up close with the majestic elk herd. With its stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife, the National Elk Refuge offers a unique and unforgettable experience for nature enthusiasts.

In the summer, the elk have all migrated away but you can still drive the refuge road in hopes of seeing bighorn sheep.
